Vendor idea is not pie in sky; sweet treat goes right in face: A Place in the Sun

It all started as an idea to generate more fun and some added excitement to the weekly Kamm’s Corners Farmers Market.

For those who don’t know, the popular market takes place 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sundays in the municipal parking lot behind Walgreens at West 165th Street and Lorain Avenue in Cleveland’s West Park neighborhood.

As my source tells me, a group of market vendors and volunteers were at a popular Kamm’s Corners area watering hole enjoying a Kamm’s Corners Lager (the special brew introduced at the Hooley in May). Some of the ideas they tossed about included a dunk tank, a cornhole event and other similar activities.

One member of the group spotted a Cleveland Indians pitcher getting hit with a cream pie in the face while he was being interviewed on television.

Eureka! That was it. The group spent the next hour plotting. Among the details were who would do the deed.

That problem was solved when a fellow West Park resident sitting a few seats away came up, introduced herself as “Jiffy,” told the group how much she loved the market and volunteered to be the “pie ninja.”

Game on.

So, the pranksters worked out the details, including selecting their first “victim.” As one disclosed, the obvious choice was Steve Lorenz, executive director of the Kamm’s Corners Development Corp., a neighborhood resident and a market regular.

Last Sunday, Lorenz was creamed — literally — at the market. Although I missed the event, I heard he was a good sport. Check out the photo on page A7.

The “secret pie society” members are enjoying the success of their first prank and reportedly planning others. But they’re also squealing on each other.

Among the names dropped were Dale Heyink of Puritas Nursery and “Cowboy George” Seres of Blaze Gourmet. Rumor has it that Joe Outlaw, official market photographer, had a hand in the high jinks.

Wisely, they’re all looking over their shoulders these days.
